MCO: Living Life and Working from HOME

Day 29, Entry 1: Never ever in my days of living would I have ever imagined living my life from the four walls of my home. End of entry.
Yes, I had to add a little dramatization to my opening statement. Nevertheless with the recent pandemic, one can agree that it has affected the livelihood of many. The usual buzz, the traffic congestion… everything has come to a standstill in an effort to flatten the curve of surging infections.
There have been its good and bad throughout the period thus far – one of the good would be enhancing my watercolour skills using this teaching site called Domestika! Now this is definitely a site I would recommend during this “stay-at-home” period. Its basically tailor-made for those who are already in the field of arts, crafts and design and would like to improve their skills in other areas; and is perfectly suited for those who have never painted a stroke till today. The saying “I can’t paint to save my life.” at the back of your mind will immediately dissipate with the courses they have to offer here.
As for me, I signed up for three courses but I will only be sharing on one of the courses in this entry. I will share on how it has made me improve gradually in a short period of time.

Meet Ana Victoria Calderon, the facilitator for this course. Ana is a water-colourist from Mexico and shares her experience in this course. In brief, it is strategically broken down making it easy for the participant to digest the basic understanding before diving into the process. Yes process! A basic understanding in design process is a core to any final outcome of an artwork!
She kick-starts your interest by sharing her where she gains her inspirations from and moves on into showcasing some of her accomplished works that range from packaging delights to admirable illustrated books.
As she eases on, she gives a short but very straightforward demonstrative tutorial on several watercolour techniques. Being a short course, she gives an encouragement to try out and share our personal experiences on following what she had done.

Nevertheless for me, this was a fruitful experience as it made me overcome an age long fear of controlling watercolour on paper. Truth be told, it was my kryptonite but the ease-ins from Ana’s course on Domestika made me improve in a short matter of time. What made it further interesting was taking my watercolour a step further and turning it into greater masterpieces with the aid of computer software such like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

This inspired me to re-open an old and abandoned account from years ago on Society6. A place where I was able to fabricate my designs onto a variety of objects for personal and home living use. Does it stop there? Unfortunately for me, it never stops as I know in my own-self that I am definitely going to grow it further for as long as I am living, breathing and walking upon this earth.
So before I take my leave, I would like to know what have you been upto throughout this period. If you have not indulged in something new, how about signing on to something that would spark your interest on Domestika?
Share your stories in the comments below. I’d like to hear from you too!

Expanding some Design Fabrication
A very long time ago, a friend once inspired me to start a product store on Society6. Back then, I was not all that sure what to upload or how to expand my designs onto products using their in-build software.
Let’s explore more digitized watercolour.I’ll post another blog soon!

Playing with Colours

it has been a really long while since I penned a post here. To be honest it has been a really long year 2019. So in this post, I will share on one of the more recent experiences.
First and foremost before I continue onward, I wish all my readers a joyous and prosperous 2020 ahead. Now let’s detail on to the main event – in this post I will be detailing on how I got students to make a simple journal-cum-reference book on the basic study of colours. The aim of the subject was to allow give them a basic introduction to the different schemes of colours and how to apply it in the various uses. At the very end of the subject, they were required to showcase their understanding in producing an abstract batik art piece.
As for the process the students were introduced to the colour wheel to familiarise with the names and how to mix the primary for the secondary and tertiary colours. To improve the practice, they were given a word of the week and they were expected to creative express that word using the colours that were learnt.
Progressing on, they began to familiarise themselves with the practice and had a better understanding on the different types of colours. This allowed them to better understand the different colour schemes. However, as this was an introductory subject, they were only exposed to complimentary, split-complimentary, analogous and triadic colours. With this now, they were briefed on their final project – to produce an abstract batik piece using one of the learnt colour schemes.
And Voila! A good experimentation with learning was achieved!

The Little Orchid

There is a saying that goes like this – “The orchid is Mother Nature’s masterpiece.” and it is that saying that makes me appreciate orchids. Using that as my subject, I made simple home setup and decided to make a square scarf.
So this was a little home adventure with my own frame that was made out of plywood, bolts and nuts.
In total, it took me a solid one and half to complete the entire scarf. So once I sketched the design onto the scarf and propped it onto the frame, I started to wax resist the design.
The purpose of the wax is to prevent the colours from merging and losing the design. There are various ways to doing this. There is also another type of resist that is used is called gutta. This is mainly used for silk painting. Not something I will explore anytime soon. As for the problems faced with using wax. You will have to very cautious as to not allow the wax to over boil. This allows the mixture of paraffin and resin to stay merged and create thicker lines… Next was the colouring process. The colours that are used are in powder form so you as the designer are able to control the colour thickness with water. Since my background design was of a pastel blue, the mixing was more water than powder. However there was one minor failure in this piece that somehow went unnoticed. I had tried to create some effects on the plain background with salt and due to the pastel colour, this effect went unnoticed.
The hardest part was managing to remove the wax. You will definitely need to be very careful when doing this as you can either scald yourself or ruin your stove if not careful.
Not long after that, I decided to explore an abstract design but this time using cotton as the base. One of the major differences is the fabrics ability to contain the water-based inks and retain it for a long period allowing the dye to set in creating in this case a fiery imagery.
More designs to be shared pretty soon.#artoftheday #designdotmuses #batikart #batikmalaysia #batikfromthehome #homemadewithlove #musemeaway #beamuse

A Potter’s Diary Part 4: One Adventure Completed

It is finally completed! But it has taken me more than a month to pen my thoughts down. Honestly, it was more of being busy in the real life with any bare time to sit down and share my experience. Nevertheless, since I am here I will also share on my currently work in progress!
So in this class I discovered the art of glazing. I was taught how to firstly prep the piece by smoothing the surface and later sponging it to make sure the piece doesn’t have dust that would prevent the glaze from sticking to the surface. Then came to prepping the glazing.
And once it had dried into the gas oven it goes for an over the night firing with the rest of the works. The final works were beyond exquisite!#ceramic #clay #clayexpression #clayexpressionmalaysia #claymalaysia #ceramicarts #ceramiclovers #designdotmuses #claystories #pottery #potterylovers #potterymalaysia

A Potter’s Diary Part 3: Patience results beauty

First and foremost, I must admit that this art is going to me a while to conquer and master. Nevertheless, I told myself I am going to master it and I will. So moving forward, I am going to share the update on my previously completed clay works. They have all undergone their first firing and I was so elated when I received the text from my “guru” telling me – “Your homework has survived the first firing!” It was truly the best thing ever!
Truth be told, I was so afraid that my clock tower was not going to make it through. But seeing that it survived the first firing makes me even happier. Now I truly need to plan the colour scheme for it and begin to make some place at home for displaying. That said, what was the lesson for the week. This week was focused on coiling upwards and blending the walls to smoothed into a pottery. I decided to make a pairing of cup and bowl.
The hardest part was controlling the coiling as the try to manage the shape requires not only patience but a firm and unshaken hand. The cup did not turn out the way I hoped but it will do for now.The next thing I learnt was spiralling the handles. Now that was truly tricky, I had to work really fast so as to avoid it from drying too quickly and from splitting. So to touch it up finally, I decided to drip off some slip on the edges. That was inspired by one of the pieces I had seen on the drying shelf.
I had a little more time spared on the clock so I decided to experiment a little more with the slip. I dropped a blob and using a stick, drag it a little into a fishie! That wraps up the weekly lesson. Upcoming will soon be the final class to level one – glazing and firing.

A Potter’s Diary Part 2: Taking Risks

So moving forward from Lesson 1, I was now introduced to making my own clay glue which is called a slip. A gluey substance that allows you to glue your pieces together. In a way, it is similar to cement for clay.
So another creation was made a forest themed vase. But this was only the beginning that inspired my personal project. A ceramic clock tower with pendulum.Onwards, a new technique will be introduced and I will also get a chance to see my already fired and read to clay pottery.
Till next time~

A Potter’s Diary-Part 1: The Journey Begins

Yes tis’ be true! One of the many traditional skills I’ve wanted to master above all is the art of pottery. And no, this has nothing to do with the classic wheel throwing scene from Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
So after months of searching around, I finally found a quaint little place hidden in the heart of USJ called Clay Expression to start this new journey of mine. Unfortunately, in all my gung-ho-ness, I have forgotten to document my very beginning and was left with the first creation!
So getting into business, Class 1 was more of an introduction to tools and workspace. Personally, there is a sense of serenity that is so perfect and sets you in the mood of working. My teacher was this young soul named Chloe. She was so soft-spoken to my usually noisy self. At this point, I remembered my random encounter with a Priest who looked me straight in the eye and told me that I need to learn to spend time in quietness. This made me realise that I was in the right place to start my new journey in life. For starters, Chloe gave me a short tour of the studio. Her tour opened my mind into the various stages and labour that is needed for creating something purely by hand. Just to let you know, I had opted for the hand-building technique which mainly focuses on building pottery. This is very unlike to the traditional wheel-throwing technique. Nevertheless, once the orientation was over, she guided me to where the clay was stored and brought me to my designated working space. The next step, was to knead the clay. Now the term knead is only used for baking dough, the correct term for clay is wedge. This was the first part of labour. The act of wedging the clay is to release the air bubbles within the clay. Caution! Failure to wedge your clay may result in your formed pottery to explode when firing in the kiln.
Moving forward, I was taught on how to hand-build a bowl using a mould. Also I learnt how to create simple swirls, stamp patterns and random shapes using cookie cutters. All these pieces are build and attached as we go to avoid the clay drying up. To get the pieces to merge, the technique called blending is taught. We use the tip of the finger or the nail to gently merge the pieces to form the bowl. After three hours, I finally did it!
More adventure to follow suit as I journey with the rest of my classes!#pottery #clayexpression_my #claymaking #apottersdiary

Special Announcement!

As of today, I will be using Etsy Stores as a platform to boost sales of some of my art pieces. Unfortunately for me, some of the older ones will no longer be seen (things like the Ong Cat series from 2018). However, those pieces still can be seen in my personal Instagram and my Facebook page. Also, some of it can be seen here on the blogs.
Please support my efforts.
Thank you all for your support so far. -
Indulging in Arts and Culture

So this time around, I decided to write about my trip to the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (www.iamm.org) and along with me I tagged my students along. For them, it was research, but for me it was looking at the same things but for a different perspective at the arts on display. There is always something new to see and learn each time I visit.
The walk through is always an amazement as the collection of works go way back in time and come from all over the place. As for the students, it was a wider range of items that amazed them. Added to that, the guide who accompanied them really gave them an insight into the architectural terms and elements. One thing that truly amazed them was also how the Arabs were fantastic matematician and applied their calculations not only into to tradings and travels but to their designs, creating beautiful ornate geometric patterned designs.
Added to that, were the fashion collections from all over the regions such like Persia, India, China and Africa. Here are some of the pictures for your viewing.#historyofart #islamicarts #travelandlearn
